The Expedition and Beyond at Principle Gallery Video

"Story Within" New Painting Video

Here's a new body of work created for Peterson-Cody Gallery, for my upcoming show opening Nov 4, 2011, Santa Fe, NM.

"Story Within"

It's a two person show with Forrest Solis.

My daughter Carly, a recent graduate of Savannah College of Art and Design, has opinions. It was her idea to do the voice over rather than music on this video.

I have to admit I experienced a little stage fright. I have no problem talking with my friends, family and students about art but I was nervous about recording my thoughts and hearing my own voice recorded.

Thanks to Carly's awesome editing you can't even tell I'm a slow southern talker, woo hoo for garage band!

I welcome comments and constructive criticism since I'm planning on doing more videos. I have a few other videos on my YouTube Channel.

Art Renewal Center's International Salon Awards

The Art Renewal Center's 2010-2011 International Salon honors have been announced. My paintings "Fast Lane" and "Voice of the Tiger" have been named finalists in the figure category, and my drawing "Mage" is a finalist in the drawing category. I'm honored to have my work included with such wonderful company!

"Voice of the Tiger" was sold through Robert Lange Studios in Charleston, SC, last year in association with the Women Painting Women show.

"If Music Be the Food of Love, Play On" video

This is a short video/slide show of my painting with details and some images of the work in progress. This painting is at the Gadsden Museum of Art, until the end of Dec 2010, and then will be heading to Peterson-Cody Gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico for their February Group Figurative Show. ENJOY!

Gadsden Museum of Art, Gadsden, Alabama

My work will be on display November-December 2010, the museum's 2010 Alabama's Finest Artists Series solo show. Last Friday, the museum gallery director, Steve Temple and I delivered 36 paintings, oil sketches and drawings to the museum. It was work from 2001- 2010, sort of a mini retrospective. I call the show "Myth and Magic in the Modern World".

 The postcard design is by Dan Hampton, museum graphic designer. I have a gallery talk on Dec 12  about my work and will do a two day workshop on November 13, and 14. The class consists of two stand-alone workshops that complement each other. Class size is limited to 12. Each day is a complete workshop and may be taken singly or together. 

“It’s All Relative!” Sat, Nov. 13, 2010, 10am-5pm
Learn to see and paint correct value AND temperature, the often overlooked 4th property of color.  You’ll create a limited palette painting incorporating the principles as you go. Once you learn to see this way your painting will be changed forever-it really is all relative! 

“So Many Colors!” Sun, Nov. 14, 2010, 1-6pm
A methodical and rational way to organize a palette and mix true colors that cuts though the confusion! Why reinvent the wheel when you can explore traditional painting methods from beginning to end? I will share my painting method condensed from 30 years experience for you.

"Women Painting Women" from a Blog to an Exhibition!

Last year Sadie Valeri, a San Francisco artist and teacher, created the Women Painting Women blog to highlight the work of living, realist women painters who use the female subject in their paintings. The blog proved to be so successful that Sadie enlisted the help of fellow artist friends Diane Feissel and Alia El-Bermani to help maintain it. They've listed over 300 artists and can now be found on facebook as well.

I met Sadie through cyberspace when she posted one of my paintings of my daughter as "Sharazade Illuminated" on the WPW Blog. It came to her attention through the Art Renewal Center's Annual Competition in which we both had work. Since then I'm a regular visitor to Sadie's website and her personal blog which is filled with great information on all aspects of art.

This year, inspired by the blog, Robert Lange Studios of Charleston, SC is hosting "Women Painting Women-A group Invitational". The show has been judged and my painting, "Voice of the Tiger" will be included along with the work of almost 50 artists this November.

The opening is November 5th, 5:30-8:30 and I'm making the trek to Charleston! I wouldn't miss the chance to meet these women and see their work in person.

"Myth and Magic in the Modern World"

My work will be on exhibit the months of November and December  2010 at the Gadsden Museum of Art in Gadsden, Alabama as part of their annual Alabama's Finest Artists Series.

"Voice of the Tiger", oil painting by Terry Strickland

Here's a video slide show of my new painting, it's 33x32, and oil on canvas over panel. The video includes close-ups and the work in progress. If you have a fast Internet connection check out the HD version just for fun.

  

This photo reference sat around in my studio for about two years, it was a favorite photo of my daughter. I loved her expression but wasn't sure what to do with the background. The composition gradually evolved with the idea of a circus poster, something about a tiger, and a storm approaching. 

Finally it came to me while watching Carnivale, the made for HBO series, that the poster should be on a canvas behind her. Isn't it interesting how we find inspiration in images, words and music from other media?

I originally took this photo when my daughter was in a vaudeville type show at a local theater, this was her costume. I had a difficult time choosing a title for this piece but when I discovered the meaning of the word "Vaudeville" it's french meaning "Voice of the City" somehow that clicked and she became "Voice of the Tiger".

"Fast Lane" in Progress

"Fast Lane" in progress, a little insight into my painting method.

It's a "Mad Science" Year

"Mad Science" has been recognized with an honorable mention in the Art Center Renewal’s 2010 International Salon. “Oracle”, charcoal, and  “Like Breath on Glass”, oil, were also recognized as finalists in this year’s competition. For my art to be included alongside these artist's whose work that I have stalked for years is an unbelievable honor!

Later this fall "Mad Science" will be in Direct Art Magazine along with my painting "Enlightenment". That is an annual NY bookazine,  since 1996, that highlights 23 artists each publication. It is always an interesting and edgy group of artists from all media so I am thrilled to be included!

The drawing "Oracle" is still available. "Like Breath on Glass" has sold to a Lebanese collector. How cool is that?

ARC 2009-2010 International Salon Competition

Uniquely Louisiana Collectors-David and Nicole Holcombe

David and Nicole Holcombe have a selection of 24 pieces from their amazing collection on display at The Meadows Museum of Art at Centenary College in Shreveport, LA. The work will be on display in the Focus Gallery through May 23, 2010.

Two of my paintings from this wonderful collection were selected to be included. "Fledgling Portal" and "Make-Way" are both from my Awakening Series.

The Holcombe's have been called "visual arts powerhouses" and have had a mission to passionately collect southern art for the past 25 years. This passion is evident in their choice of works as well as in the voice of the collection. David and Nicole have forged long-term relationships with many of the artists whose work they have acquired including me and my family.

David gave a talk at the museum highlighting 6 principles of collecting, principles that explain the "Hows" and "Whys" of their collecting.

1. Original art is always better than posters. Even bad original Art is better than a poster. (Yipee!)
2. You don't have to be rich to collect art. You just have to be attentive and interested. (Absolutely)
3. Never buy art as a financial investment. Art is a human investment. (I could not agree more)
4. Don't buy anything from dead artists. (I like this!)
5. There's no one gold standard for art. There are two common elements and they are on opposite ends of the spectrum. One is passion and the other is technique. (Two parts that make up the the whole in inspired art!)
6. When your house is full don't stop buying. (Yes! Yes! Yes!)

My husband and I use these same ideas when we add to our own art collection!

This was taken when we delivered the second painting to the Holcombe's at their beautiful Alexandria, LA home where we were treated to their wonderful overnight hospitality last fall.

This is what David had to say about "Make-Way":

“Make Way (Portrait of their son, Kyle Strickland).” We saw this work in a Masur Museum of Art Annual Competition (in Monroe, LA). The work was a stunning combination of feeling and technique. After much thought, we decided to purchase it. Terry Strickland and her husband, Dan, were delighted…the acquisition took on the character of an adoption more than a purchase. They insisted on delivering the painting in person, seeing where it was to be placed in our home, and revealing lots of details about their son. It captures that moment when young people pass through the portal of childhood into adulthood.The marbles represent the dangers of the world and the Christmas light symbolize the reassuring warmth of family.

And about "Fledgling Portal":

“Fledgling Portal (Portrait of Shannon).” This was another in Terry’s coming of age series. We so enjoyed “Kyle” that we decided to add this companion piece many years later. Originally, we thought it was Kyle’s sister, but Shannon proved to be a close family friend. It has the same attention to detail as the portrait of Kyle.  Unlike Kyle, the lighting comes from below and creates a more ominous effect.  Shannon, her wings attached, stands with her arms crossed, as if resentful and undecided about going through the “Fledgling Portal.” 

Becoming friends with my collectors has been an amazing aspect of this profession that I had not anticipated before I became a full-time painter. To be able to hear a family's story and know why they relate to a piece is such a privilege.

When David and Nicole say that buying a piece of artwork is an investment in relationships they are so right. Our lives are enriched on so many levels by all of our collectors and patrons of the arts...I hope they know they are appreciated!

Mississippi University for Women Art Gallery in Columbus

I'll be the visiting artist at MUW. This event is a Eudora Welty Writers' Symposium Event.

The gallery director, Alex Stelioes-Wills, has chosen my painting "Venus Speaks" to be the image used on the gallery's 2009-10 events poster and the invitation piece for the solo show.

This painting is a self portrait with husband. It is 12"x38" and was done around the time of our 26th anniversary. This painting made me smile the entire time I was working on it.

This painting went straight into our art collection so it has never been exhibited. It will be fun to show it for the first time in Mississippi!

This is the beautiful gallery space with the current show, a faculty exhibit.

The exhibit of thirty paintings and drawings will be up Oct 8-Nov 4, 2009 with a reception Friday, Oct 23, 5:30-7pm. The show will be in the Eugenia Summer Gallery on the MUW campus which is open Monday-Friday, 10am-4pm
